“Power of Food” Gives Students a Role in Solving the Climate Crisis

Washington, DC – June 17, 2025 – What if your lunch could help solve the climate crisis? That’s the powerful question behind The Power of Food, a unique curriculum from nonprofit Climate Diet now reaching middle and high school classrooms.

Designed by educators and environmental strategists, the program teaches students the direct link between food systems and climate change. Through lessons on extreme weather, emissions, and food equity, students learn how eating more plant-forward meals can benefit both the planet and their health.“

“Climate education is often focused on doom and disaster,” says Jane DeMarines, the program’s director. “This flips the script and shows students how they can make a difference—starting with what’s on their plate.”

Data from Our World in Data shows plant-rich diets are one of the top global climate solutions. Meanwhile, over 70 billion animals are raised annually for food, contributing massive amounts of methane and using 16% of the world’s freshwater supply. The program also addresses environmental justice and health disparities, especially in communities of color, while giving students a voice in climate solutions.

Available free to Montgomery County public schools, the curriculum supports health and science standards and includes teacher training, food sampling, and optional guest speakers. To bring the program to your classroom, contact Climate Diet for permission and materials.
